OTORA hosts community forum on Old Town Orcutt Streetscape Plan

At the Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association (OTORA), we are dedicated to fostering a vibrant and thriving downtown. Recently, in collaboration with the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department, we held a public meeting at the OASIS Center to discuss crucial transportation improvements, including parking, parklets, and bulb-outs in Old Town Orcutt.

This meeting was a vital opportunity for community members to voice their opinions and learn about the Old Town Orcutt Streetscape Concept Plan, which spans Clark Avenue from Highway 135 to Marcum Street. Adopted in 2006, this plan aims to maximize parking, enhance pedestrian safety, and maintain the charm of our historic town.

Chris Sneddon, county deputy director for public works, explained the importance of countywide ordinances for parklets while ensuring flexibility for specific areas like ours. Attendees received detailed packets outlining the streetscape concept, helping them understand the vision for our town’s future.

A major discussion point was parking, with four potential options presented. These ranged from keeping the current layout to expanding angled parking or introducing center aisle parking, increasing available spots significantly. Each option has its pros and cons, and we are eager to find a solution that best serves residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Community feedback was a key component of this meeting. We heard concerns about how proposed changes might impact beloved traditions, such as the Orcutt Christmas Parade, a cherished event for over 60 years. We recognize the importance of preserving our town’s traditions while making necessary improvements, and we will ensure these concerns are brought to the Board of Supervisors for consideration.

We deeply appreciate everyone’s participation and commitment to shaping Old Town Orcutt’s future. Your input matters, and together, we can create a town that balances growth with tradition.
